Empty Bowls
This weekend Wesleyan hosted its first annual Empty Bowls event to raise money for the Lincoln Food Bank’s Backpack Program. This program provides backpacks full of food for children who don’t always have a healthy meal, let alone food to eat, over the weekend. Lisa Lockman, an art professor at NWU, initially got the ball rolling on this project, and then others on campus began to get involved. Over the last few months, local elementary schools, art studios, and the Wesleyan community have been creating and painting clay bowls to donate to the fundraiser. There were over 760 by Saturday! With each ticket purchase, the donor received a handmade bowl of their choice, a warm soup supper, bread, and a drink.
The Wesleyan Communication Association (WCA) was asked to help with ticket sales, but as we planned for the event, we couldn’t help but to get more involved. I am the Vice President of Programming for the organization, and, along with the other WCA officers, I was able to really get involved with promoting the event. We put up posters around town, had banners made to promote it, and tied ribbons on over 500 bookmarks that we gave away as table favors.
The turnout was absolutely fabulous! There were over 425 tickets sold, each raising $15 for the Food Bank. We had a full staff of student volunteers there to help with set up and take down. I had a blast listening to the faculty band rock out on stage as the entertainment for the day too. My favorite song was their version of KT Tunstall’s “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree.” But my friend Kelsey and I also loved when our professor, Dr. Rachel Pokora, rocked out on the cowbell for one of the songs!
It is a bit of a relief that it is over and that it went so well, but I am definitely excited to be involved again next year!

Weary Center work out
One of my favorite plaaces to hang out on campus is the Weary Center. I always go there intending to bike for 20 minutes, lift a few weights and then be on my way. However, that rarely happens.
Last week I was in the cardio room biking away and watching some of my friends play basketball through the window. Of course when I took a drink break they convinced me to join in “for just one game” of Seven’s, which is a three point shooting game. Before I knew it, we had been playing for more than an hour! We just kept throwing up threes game after game because we were having so much fun.
The next night was the same turn of events. Wednesday followed suit too. By Thursday, I came to expect our traditions. Spring break broke up our fun, but last night we were back in the gym again. I love being able to make great memories with my friends while staying healthy and active working out in the Weary Center.
Intramurals are another activity I love participating in at the Weary Center. The free t–shirt for the winning team is always an incentive, but just playing a competitive sport again is a blast. Recently, my team won the girl’s intramural basketball championship by one point! We played against some of our good friends and the game was pretty intense. No matter what though, we play just to have a good time!
Up next, the intramural Easter Egg Hunt, which is easily my favorite event! =)
