Nebraska Wesleyan University
Physics Department
Majors
- Physics (BA and BS)
- Physics Education in conjunction with Education Department (BA)
Minors
- Physics
Opportunities
- Get on the fast track for a master's in engineering through our Dual-Degree Engineering Program with three universities.
- Conduct your own independent research or assist your professors, and:
- publish your work in scientific journals
- present at Nebraska Academy of Sciences
- Use the latest equipment in our electronics, optics and radiation measurement labs.
- Study astronomy in our planetarium and rooftop observatory.
Careers and Outcomes
Our graduates are:
- science and physics educators
- environmental engineers
- nuclear engineers
- geophysicists
- hospital electronics technicians
- architects
- medical radiation physicians
- USMC Harrier pilots
- university chancellors
- meteorologists
- communication engineers
- government engineers
- research physicists
Our department is small, meaning our majors receive one-on-one attention, and leave prepared for a variety of fields. Over the last 10 years:
- 18 entered engineering school at Washington University in St. Louis
- 6 served in the military
- 7 entered engineering school at UNL
- 2 entered the medical field
With a physics degree at NWU, you can be anything from a structural engineer on a nuclear submarine to a university chancellor. You can build bridges or microchips, study stars or electrons…
Department-related Activities
- Student Physics Society
- Sigma Pi Sigma, physics honorary
- Department potlucks and picnics
Fast Facts
- Our nuclear lab has equipment and resources you can't find elsewhere in the state. Some UNL graduate students use our facilities for their research.
- Students and faculty do fun educational demonstrations for elementary students.
- We have one of the few teaching planetariums in Nebraska.
